Palmeiras extended their unbeaten streak in the league last weekend as they defeated Athletico Paranaense 1-0 at home with a late penalty strike. They enjoyed a brilliant league match and controlled all the actions but failed to get through the visitors’ well-positioned backline despite creating 21 chances. The contest was heading for a draw, but Palmeiras were awarded a penalty in the 80th minute and midfielder Raphael Veiga struck home, sealing their sixth consecutive win in the league. They remain at the top of the league standings with 22 points and a five-point lead over second-placed Santos.

Avai continue to be the only team in the league who haven’t tasted a single league win this season, after only managing to draw 0-0 against Sao Paulo at home last time out. The visiting side had the best chances, but overall it was an even league contest, which ended in a fair result for both sides. Goalkeeper Vladimir was Avai’s man of the match, having made three excellent saves which would have cost them the point - but that was the only positive to take from their performance. The team are now rock bottom in the table with only four points from eight league matches.

This should be plain and simple: League leaders Palmeiras are unbeaten since the start of the season, have the best attack and best defensive record, and they will be playing against Avai, the last-placed team in the standings, who are still winless in league action and have two key players suspended. Going for a home win here is a no brainer.

Palmeiras have scored an impressive 16 goals in their eight league matches so far, and have broken the deadlock on all eight occasions. They should easily be able to repeat that feat against Avai, who have scored first just once in the league this season.

The teams last faced each other in league action in 2017 when both won their home encounters. Palmeiras have won five and lost only one of their last six league meetings with Avai.
