Palmeiras visited rock-bottom Ceara at the weekend and were 2-0 up within the first 23 minutes, but ended up conceding a late equaliser two minutes from time. The 2-2 result ensured that the team are still on a three-match unbeaten run (two wins, one draw), but they will have been disappointed with the outcome against such a weak team. They are now in sixth and will host the league leaders at home in their final game ahead of the World Cup.

Flamengo claimed a comfortable 2-0 home win over second-from-bottom Parana on Sunday and secured their position at the top of the standings ahead of the upcoming World Cup break as they are six points ahead of second-placed Atletico Mineiro. They are unbeaten in their last six games (five wins, one draw), have kept a clean sheet in their last five and have won all of those.

I should say there is no stopping Flamengo right now, but the leaders haven’t defeated Palmeiras in any of their last seven encounters, drawing three and losing four times. However, Palmeiras have lost one and drawn one of their last four home games, so I can’t see them beating the leaders here. A draw should fit the scenario.

Flamengo have the joint second best defence in the league with only six goals against and have kept a clean sheet in the league since late May. Palmeiras have only conceded four goals at home this season – and three of them in one game – so they are not used to conceding much either. I predict a low-scoring encounter.

Flamengo have failed to beat Palmeiras in their last seven encounters, with their win over this week’s opponents dating back to May 2014.
