Nigeria: On the edge of the abyss ( Recent Form: L D L L L )

After one game played, the position of Nigeria looks pretty desolate. The Africans produced an extremely poor match against Croatia and that resulted in a deserved 2-0 loss. An own goal by Oghenekaro Etebo brought Croatia to the lead and later it was Luka Modric who managed to end the game by shooting a penalty kick against the ropes. The defeat against Croatia did not come as a surprise, but it has now become clear that the formation of national coach Gernot Rohr will have to make progress to make it to the next round. The lack of pure form seems to break up Nigeria at the moment. The Super Eagles were relatively easy for the World Cup and at the beginning of this year the final of the Africa Cup, which was lost by 4-0 from Morocco, was still reached. The last five international matches resulted in four defeats and a draw against DR Congo, which shows that Nigeria simply can not get the right flow. Before the game against Iceland, the question now is whether Rohr will throw the case or whether he will give his intended basic eleven another chance to show the qualities. On the basis of the last training sessions he seems to be going for the second choice. Leon Balogun, who was in the run-up to the duel with Croatia with a slight injury, is again expected in the base.

Iceland: The underdog continues to amaze ( Recent Form: L L L D D )

Iceland, which at Euro 2016 on the debut in a big tournament immediately reached the quarterfinals, the production of surprises has not yet been forgotten. The team of national coach Heimir Hallgrimmsson had to play in the first match of the World Cup against Argentinia but prevented a defeat. Sergio Aguero put the Argentines on an 1-0 lead, but not long after that it was Alfred Finnbogason who managed to bring the Icelanders back alongside. By defending compactly and a crucial save by Hannes Halldorsson that parried Lionel Messi's penalty, Iceland managed to pull the 1-1 draw over the line. This draw has undoubtedly led to a boost, but Iceland will have to rise above itself twice to reach the second round. The last five international matches yielded three defeats and two draws and that shows that Iceland may not have the very best form. The fact is that Iceland again managed to prevent a defeat against a better opponent and that is simply a great achievement. Hallgrimsson actually has no reason to make surprising changes for the game against Nigeria. Nevertheless, a new player will probably appear in the starting line, as Johan Berg Gudmundsson suffers from a calf injury. His absence has not yet been confirmed, but it seems impossible that he can take action. Rurik Gislason, who replaced Gudmundsson against Argentina after 63 minutes, now seems to be heading for his first place in the tournament.

After all, Nigeria and Iceland are two teams that had a lot of trouble in their last match to find the net. I expect a fairly close game that is probably going to be decided on details. I'm going for under 2 goals.
