The second-placed Jets host second-last Roar
New Newcastle Jets signing Patricio Rodriguez marked his debut with a goal in the 2-0 win over Central Coast Mariners in midweek, while Nigel Boogaard, Ivan Vujica and Jack Duncan all returned to the squad. Ben Kantarovski is a chance to shake off injury and resume.
Brisbane Roar have a host of absentees, but they welcomed back Eric Bautheac following a hamstring injury in Monday’s 3-0 home loss to Sydney FC. Avraam Papadopoulos and Matt McKay are both available again after suspension in a boost.
Newcastle Jets
Suspended: None
Doubtful: Ben Kantarovski (back)
Injured/unavailable: Ronald Vargas (ankle), Roy O’Donovan (groin); Nick Cowburn, Joe Champness (international duty)
Brisbane Roar
Suspended: None
Doubtful: Brett Holman (calf)
Injured/unavailable: Connor O’Toole (concussion), Michael Theo (finger), Jade North (groin), Joe Caletti (foot), Ivan Franjic (quad), Nick D’Agostino (ankle)
Newcastle Jets appear Sydney FC’s biggest challenger this season and games like this are games they need to win to keep the pressure on the leaders. After being wobbly at home early, the Jets have won their past three matches at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Brisbane Roar are struggling down the wrong end of the table, having lost four of their past five games. Roar have only lost twice in six away games, claiming two wins and two draws. Roar have conceded ten goals in their past five games and Newcastle’s threats are numerous, so I can’t look past the home side for the win.
Newcastle Jets have scored 11 goals in their past five matches, while Brisbane Roar have only managed four strikes in their past six matches. Newcastle’s forward line is potent, led by Andrew Nabbout, Dimi Petratos and now Patricio Rodriguez and I think they will find a way through Roar before their opponents do the same in reverse. The Jets have scored first in four of their past five games too.
There is nothing splitting these sides overall, with both clubs sharing 15 wins and 11 draws from 41 encounters. The respective away side has won the past three meetings. Interestingly, Newcastle Jets have only won one of their past five encounters in Newcastle.
