Joao Schmidt gave Grampus a 1-1 draw at Shonan Bellmare, with a 2nd half equaliser for the point last weekend in J1, but really, the goal should go down to a goalkeeping error as Grampus failed to ignite in the match. Grampus are the top scorers in J1 with 18 goals but they key to their position of 2nd place in the table is the fact that they have improved their defence big time. In their four most recent league matches, although unbeaten, they have managed just a goal-a-game as most teams have figured out their game plan and adjusted accordingly. But that goal-a-game has brought them two wins and two draws in four. Grampus were 2-0 down in League Cup play in midweek against Cerezo Osaka before coming back for the 2-2 home draw!

Last weekend in J1 Reds went down to struggling Jubilo Iwata in a 1-0 home defeat that saw them concede the goal deep into additional time, Takuya Aoki's mistake in a pass back to the 'keeper giving Jubilo their goal. Reds have just lost 1-0 after a terrible defensive error gave their visitors the win last week. Before that they had three clean sheets, and three wins, and looked like having another clean sheet until that last-gasp error. Their players will be highly-concentrated to ensure they do not make the same mistake again and the defence will be tighter as a result. With Asian Champions League play either side of this game (won 2-1 away at Buriram United in their Asian Champions league match on Tuesday) too, Reds may be conserving energy – especially away from home – and looking for the draw. Having scored just eight goals this campaign, they appear to be looking more defensively as the season progresses.

Reds impressive defence and Grampus' inability to score as many goals as they did last season, or even earlier this campaign, the efforts will cancel each other out for a draw, I feel.

With five clean sheets in the league this season so far, and having scored more than one goal only twice, Reds have been economic in J1 as they also try to manage an Asian Champions league campaign. Just two of their 11 league matches have seen more than two goals. With Grampus having improved at the back, and scoring less than last year, I feel that we are in for a low-scoring draw as these teams share the points. It's a 1-1, maybe even a 0-0.

In J1 matches between these two teams last season each team won their home game.
