MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Monterrey claimed a 2-0 away win against Santos Laguna last weekend. The visitors had less possession and shots on target than their opponents. However, Nicolas Sanchez hit the back of the net with a powerful header in the 53rd minute and Rogelio Funes Mori doubled the lead six minutes later. The victory gave Monterrey an emphatic 3-0 win on aggregate and secured the club’s place in the semi-finals. Having comfortably seen off the defending champions in the previous round, the team will advance to the next stage with confidence and momentum on their side.

Cruz Azul were held to a 1-1 home draw against Queretaro in the return leg of their playoff quarter-finals and qualified for the semi-finals with a 3-1 aggregate win. The hosts had just one shot on target, when Elias Hernandez netted a curling right-foot strike in the fourth minute. Nevertheless, the team maintained their focus and organisation as they defended for the rest of the contest. Although Queretaro had four shots on goal they only managed to score once, when Luis Romo netted a header in the 61st minute. Pedro Caixinha’s side were less dominant in the return leg than the first, but the team’s defensive strategy was enough to secure the aggregate win.

Although Cruz Azul are top seeds in the playoffs, having finished the regular season at the top of the league standings, I am picking Monterrey to win the first leg of this semi-final fixture. The club have won all of their past five encounters at home in the league and playoffs. In contrast, Cruz Azul have a mixed away record, having won three and lost three of their past six matches on their travels in the league and playoffs. Given that form, I expect Monterrey to secure the victory in the first leg of this playoff semi-final.

SECOND PREDICTION: ODD/EVEN – EVEN

During the regular league stage, Cruz Azul recorded six even scorelines in eight games on their travels, whereas Monterrey registered four in their last six regular league games at home. Six of the past seven league encounters between Monterrey and Cruz Azul have also ended with an even scoreline. Given that record, I will therefore go with even total goals.

HEAD TO HEAD

Cruz Azul have won two and drawn four of their past six regular league stage encounters against Monterrey. Cruz Azul claimed a 2-1 win over Monterrey when the teams last met in the league in October.
