Just one change is likely for the hosts with Marc Bola hoping to replace Hayden Coulson at left-back. George Friend is expected to return to the squad after missing the last match but the home side will have one absentee in centre-half Dael Fry, who continues his recovery from a hamstring problem.

Ecuadorian winger Joel Valencia arrived too soon to feature as Brentford lost to Birmingham on the opening day but could be handed a debut up top come Saturday. Defender Mads Bech Sorensen is out with an undiagnosed injury.

Jonathan Woodgate enjoyed a positive start to his managerial career on Friday night as his Middlesbrough side drew 3-3 away at Kenilworth Road. The Teessiders enjoyed 17 shots to Luton’s 12 and dominated for large periods of the game. Boro had just the 14th best home record in the Championship last season and that ultimately cost them a play-off spot as they finished seventh, one point behind Derby County.

Brentford were poor on the road last season winning just three, drawing nine and losing 11 of their 23 away league matches and Thomas Frank will know that improved away form will be key to achieving their desired play-off finish this season.

The Bees lost 1-0 at home to Birmingham last weekend despite managing 15 shots to Birmingham’s one (a header from the edge of the box). If Thomas Frank’s men produce a similar performance at the Riverside they’ll walk away with at least a point.

Middlesbrough had the best defence in the Championship last season conceding an average of just 0.89 goals per game. However, Jonathan Woodgate tore up Tony Pulis’ defensive style over the summer and after watching Boro score and concede three in a 3-3 thriller on the opening day, it’s clear to see this season will be different. Brentford had the fifth best attack in the league last season, scoring 1.59 goals per game on average last season and were unlucky not to score against Birmingham after having 15 efforts on goal.

Brentford beat Middlesbrough 2-1 at the Riverside back in March 2019 to end a run of 12 matches against the Teessiders without a win.
