Melbourne City’s injury list is far shorter than Brisbane Roar’s, which has been extended by Danish midfielder Tobias Mikkelsen’s groin problem.

Melbourne City

Suspended: None

Doubtful: None

Injured/unavailable: Moudi Najjar (ankle)

Brisbane Roar

Suspended: None

Doubtful: None

Injured/unavailable: Brett Holman, Luke DeVere (both knee); Tobias Mikkelsen, Stefan Mauk (both groin); Jack Hingert (anterior cruciate ligament), Connor O’Toole (leg), Dane Ingham (foot)

Sixth-placed Melbourne City have just one win from their past eight league matches and collected only six points during that run, drawing three and losing four. They went down 3-0 away to the Western Sydney Wanderers in the last round, heaping pressure on coach Warren Joyce. The team are seven points ahead of the seventh-placed Newcastle Jets, so with four league games to go, they can seal their finals spot with victory.

Ninth-placed Brisbane Roar have suffered three consecutive league defeats, going down 3-1 to second-placed Sydney FC at home in the last round. Brisbane have collected nine points from their past 18 league matches (two wins, three draws, 13 losses).

It is hard to make a case for Brisbane Roar, given their form, while Melbourne City’s motivation is to finally confirm a top six berth and find some form. I’m backing the hosts.

The past three league encounters between these clubs have all ended with fewer than 2.5 total goals scored. Given these two clubs are two of the lowest scoring in the Australian top flight this season, with Melbourne City netting 28 and Brisbane Roar 31 goals so far, I expect to see another low-scoring league contest.

Melbourne City have won their last three home league encounters against Brisbane Roar.
