Argentine Division 1 -- Gimnasia La Plata  VS  Newells Old Boys

Livescore | Match Prediction & Tips| Asian Handicap Odds|Line-ups & H2H Stats

Gimnasia LP players Alexis Martin Arias and Lorenzo Faravelli were sent off in the city derby against Estudiantes last weekend and are suspended, as is Gonzalo Piovi, who saw his fifth yellow card in that league game. Manuel Guanini remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Newell’s Old Boys boss Hector Bidoglio will find it tough to pick midfielders for this league contest as Jeronimo Cacciabue and Ribair Rodriguez were sent off against Talleres last weekend while Braian Rivero was given his fifth yellow card. Left back Mariano Bittolo succumbed to a knee problem in the same league game and will miss out. However, Maximiliano Ruben Rodriguez, Stefano Callegari and Cristian Insaurralde are all expected to return after their respective injuries.

Gimnasia LP succumbed to a devastating defeat last weekend as they were beaten 1-0 by Estudiantes in a controversial city derby at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata. El Lobo have managed only a single victory in the last five league matches, drawing one and losing three. As a result, they are on a disappointing 22 points and are yet to secure their top-flight status. The team have won two, drawn one and lost only one of their last four home league matches.

After enjoying a seven-match unbeaten run with three wins and four draws, Newell’s Old Boys have registered their first two league defeats since Hector Bidoglio’s official arrival in the dugout in late December. The team were beaten 4-2 away at River Plate two weeks ago before losing 2-1 against Talleres at home despite breaking the deadlock through Luis Leal in the 12th minute. Overall, La Lepra have produced mixed performances this season and have amassed a lowly 25 points so far whilst sitting in 16th. They have been particularly struggling on their travels where they have won only once, drawn three and lost seven times in league action (one of the matches played on neutral ground).

Two inconsistent sides will meet here, but Gimnasia LP have been decent at home recently and should be able to take advantage of Newell’s Old Boys’ problems on the road. A home win seems likely.

Both sides have registered nine first-half draws this season. Gimnasia LP have been ahead after 45 minutes just once on their own turf while Newell’s Old Boys are yet to be leading at half time on the road. I expect another first-half draw.

Each side have claimed two victories in the last six league meetings, along with two draws. Gimnasia LP are unbeaten in their last three home league encounters, winning two and drawing one.
