Brasileirao’s reigning champions to claim a comfortable win
Corinthians focused on bringing in substitutes during the transfer window, with striker Junior Dutra and midfielder Rene Junior arriving from Avai and from Bahia respectively. However, the most noteworthy additions to their squad are youngster Matheus Vital (Vasco) and veteran Emerson Sheik (free agent). They also parted ways with last year’s top scorer Jo and left back Guilherme Arana. Last year’s champions don’t have any relevant injury news regarding their main players for this match.
Fluminense’s transfer window highlight was the controversial release of star midfielder Gustavo Scarpa who then signed for Palmeiras. The club also released goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri and centre back Henrique. The only relevant arrival was ex-Botafogo midfielder Airton. Fluminense will be missing regular right-back Lucas and midfielder Marcos Calazans for their season opener.

Last year’s Brasileirao champions Corinthians lifted yet another title last weekend after beating rivals Palmeiras on penalties in the Campeonato Paulista final, so they will go into this league opener in high spirits and will be hoping for a positive start to their campaign. Despite having not settled on one specific formation or line-up, they are dealing well with the situation and are making the most out of their lean squad.
Their first league opponents, Fluminense, who finished last season in an uninspiring 14th position, have started the year badly after exiting the Copa do Brasil in the first round following a 1-0 defeat to Avai. They also lost 3-2 against Vasco da Gama in the Campeonato Carioca semi-finals two weeks ago, but they did beat Bolivia’s Nacional Potosi 3-0 at home in midweek in the first round of the Copa Sudamericana.
Nevertheless, Fluminense have no playing pattern under manager Abel Braga and they will probably come unstuck when playing Corinthians away from home. It really should be a comfortable win for the hosts.
Corinthians have been leading at half time in two of their last three wins in all competitions while Fluminense ended last season with three first-half goals conceded in their last two league games. I think the hosts will be ahead after 45 minutes.
In the last six encounters between these two sides, there have been three wins for Corinthians, two victories for Fluminense and one draw.
