With last round’s 1-1 away against Avai, Corinthians come from eight consecutive unbeaten matches in the league, but that doesn’t mean they have been playing well. They arrived at this round placed only five points behind the leaders and with clear chances of fighting for the title, but out of all the teams close to the top they are the ones with the worst football.

They have other competitions to play at the same time they are playing the Brasileiro, but they haven’t been resting all their main players in the league, unlike other clubs that are playing two or more competitions at the same time. One of them is Atletico Mineiro, who are only one point behind Corinthians and have been using reserves in the league to rest their main players for cup matches, which is what they did last round to focus on the Copa Sulamericana quarterfinals. That cost them the points in the game, as they lost 1-0 at home to Bahia.

That was their second 1-0 back to back, which got them further behind the leaders, disappoint their fans who were hoping for a fight for the title. Now, even if they don’t use mostly reserves in this match they will be tired after a long trip to Colombia and even though Corinthains also had a midweek cup match they stayed in Brazil, which will make it easier for them to handle this match and get the win.

Corinthians played 16 times in the league this year and scored first in ten of those matches, but even more impressive than that is the fact that seven out of those ten games had them as hosts, meaning that they didn’t score first in only one of the matches they played at home in the league this year. With that kind of record we can safely say they will be the first team to score here.

Corinthians won only one of their last seven matches against Atletico Mineiro and it wasn’t even at home. It was a 2-0 away win a couple of years ago, and during this period they saw Atletico get three wins, but none away.
