CF America secured a 2-0 away win against rock-bottom Veracruz in their final regular league fixture last weekend. Roger Martinez struck from close range after just three minutes and Nicolas Castillo doubled the lead with a diagonal shot in the second half. With the win, Miguel Herrera’s side qualified as fifth seed for the playoffs, with 29 points. The defending champions have not looked like the dominant force that they were in the Apertura stage. However, no one will be counting out their chances of lifting the Clausura title this time.

Cruz Azul qualified as fourth seed for the playoffs after a disappointing final league fixture at home against strugglers Monarcas Morelia, in which they were held to a 1-1 draw. The hosts conceded the opening goal to Edison Flores and had to maintain their composure to level. Edgar Mendez won a penalty when he was brought down in the area in the 52nd minute and Milton Caraglio stepped up to convert the penalty. Pedro Caixinha’s side will enter the playoffs in excellent form, having produced an impressive run of ten league games without a loss, winning six and drawing four.

Nevertheless, Cruz Azul face a tough challenge in their opening game of the league playoffs and will not start as favourites against the reigning champions, who lost only twice at home during the regular league campaign (six wins, one draw). With the home advantage, I am picking CF America to play their signature attacking football and claim the win in the first leg of their quarterfinal encounter. A home victory seems the most probable outcome.

Three of CF America’s four most recent home games during the regular league stage ended with two total goals or below. Similarly, seven of Cruz Azul’s nine league matches on their travels during the regular league stage this season have ended with a scoreline of two total goals or below. Given that record, I'm backing another low-scoring league match here.

CF America have won two and drawn three of their past five meetings against Cruz Azul in the league and playoffs. Both sides played to a goalless draw when the teams met in the league last month.
