Cruz Azul’s Adrian Aldrete is in doubt with an unspecified injury.

Guadalajara’s Carlos Cisneros has regained full fitness. However, Jesus Sanchez is suspended after he received a red card against Tijuana.

Cruz Azul secured a 1-1 draw away against Puebla last weekend. The visitors dominated possession but both teams had just three shots on target. Pedro Caixinha’s side opened the scoring thanks to a long-range strike from Elias Hernandez in the 25th minute. However, Lucas Cavallini equalised for Puebla with a well-placed penalty just four minutes later. A single point will not satisfy Cruz Azul, who will be determined to improve on their Apertura performance, where they dominated the league stage, finishing first with a three-point lead, but slipped up in the final against CF America. Nevertheless, the performance against Puebla suggested that team spirit is high at Cruz Azul. With new signings Orbelin Pineda and Yoshimar Yotun in their squad, the team certainly have the talent to challenge for the title this time around.

Guadalajara had an excellent start to their Clausura campaign, as they claimed a 2-0 home win over Tijuana. The team look coordinated and offensively potent throughout the league match. Alan Pulido netted a header in the 55th minute and Isaac Brizuela doubled the lead with a right foot strike in the final minute of play. The team will be happy with their performance and with the three points that they already have in the bag. After finishing their Apertura campaign in a disappointing 11th place, trailing the top eight by six points, Jose Cardozo’s side will need to qualify for the playoffs this season. In fact, the manager’s job will almost certainly be on the line if he fails to make that aim a reality. However, he did manage to record a second victory in midweek in a cup tie against second-division outfit Cimarrones Sonora, with his team securing a 2-1 win on the road.

In my view, the away league match against Cruz Azul is a step too far for Guadalajara. Caixinha’s side were unbeaten at home last season and boasted the best home record with eight wins and one draw. Although Guadalajara looked impressive in the opening match, I think a victory for the hosts is the most likely outcome.

16 of Cruz Azul’s 23 league and playoff matches in the Apertura stage ended with a scoreline of two total goals or below. Nine of Guadalajara’s 17 Apertura matches ended with two total goals or fewer. Given those facts, I'm backing another low-scoring league match here.

Cruz Azul have won four, drawn two and lost one of their past seven league encounters against Guadalajara. The visitors claimed a 1-0 win over Guadalajara when they last played in the league in July.
