Bolton’s Jack Hobbs, Luke Murphy and Yanic Wildschut are all doubts and Jason Lowe remains on the sidelines. Gary O’Neil limped off at the weekend and is questionable.

Middlesbrough’s Lewis Wing is set to undergo groin surgery and joins Sam McQueen on the sidelines. George Friend was forced off at Swansea with a muscle injury in his hip and is expected to miss out.

Financial problems and an off-the-pitch player strike after the club’s inability to pay wages have not helped Bolton in their quest for survival. Their chances of remaining in the top flight were further hampered at the weekend as they succumbed to a 2-1 league defeat at home against rock-bottom Ipswich, but the league match did at least go ahead after a prohibition order was successfully overthrown last week. The Trotters have now lost 11, won three and drawn only one of their 15 league matches in 2019 - a disastrous run that leaves them eight points from safety.

Tony Pulis’ job at Middlesbrough has come severely under scrutiny after his troops fell to their sixth consecutive league loss at Swansea City in the last round. Boro found themselves 3-0 behind until the 81st minute when George Saville scored a consolation goal in the team’s 3-1 away defeat. To their frustration, Middlesbrough have scored only three times in their last seven league matches, collecting only a point in the process. The team still have a decent away record in the English second division though, with 31 points from a possible 60 so far.

Everything seems to be going against Bolton while Middlesbrough have hardly shone themselves. With motivation a serious issue at the Macron Stadium and Boro only four points adrift of the playoff places, I do think though we will be in for an away win.

Middlesbrough have won their last two league meetings against Bolton 2-0. The Trotters have conceded exactly two goals in four of their last five league losses too, while Tony Pulis’ men have scored an average of two goals in their last five league victories. Expect this league match to end in a 2-0 away win.

Middlesbrough are by far the superior side in this head-to-head when it comes to their most recent league encounters, having won the last seven straight.
