Birmingham’s Maikel Kieftenbeld returned to the starting XI after an illness at the weekend, but only lasted for the first 57 minutes when he was brought down. The midfielder was carried off and is now questionable. Gary Gardner came off at half time after feeling ill.

Sheff Utd midfielder Mark Duffy started last time out after overcoming an Achilles injury, but Jack O'Connell is yet to feature despite returning to training while Jake Wright remains out. However, Gary Madine returns from suspension.

Suspended: None

Doubtful: Charlie Lakin (knock), Maikel Kieftenbeld (unspecified), Gary Gardner (ill)

Injured/unavailable: None

Sheff Utd

Suspended: None

Doubtful: Jack O'Connell (calf)

Injured/unavailable: Jake Wright (cheekbone)

March was not a good month for Birmingham who were deducted nine point for breaching EFL profitability and sustainability rules and lost all of their five league fixtures, scoring only twice in the process. However, they started off April with an unexpected result over Leeds, inflicting a surprise 1-0 home league success over the promotion hopefuls last time out. Garry Monk’s team are the first to complete a league double over United this term, with Che Adams scoring the winner in the 29th minute. Nevertheless, Blues remain only five points ahead of the bottom three.

Sheff Utd bounced back after a devastating 3-2 loss at home against Bristol City in round 39, beating Preston 1-0 at Deepdale at the weekend. That league victory propelled the side back into second, with the Blades leapfrogging Leeds. Chris Wilder’s troops are trailing leaders Norwich by seven points and have lost only once in league action since mid-January, winning eight and drawing three league matches along the way.

Birmingham will be buzzing after their important weekend triumph, but Sheff Utd are by far the stronger team and have taken ten points from their last four away league matches. Expect the Blades to win here.

Sheff Utd have opened the scoring in their last five league matches, and I expect to see them to do same against Birmingham in midweek.

Sheff Utd have not won against Birmingham in league action in the last decade, having lost two and drawn one of their last three league meetings.
