Atlas were beaten 1-0 in a league fixture away against Pachuca last weekend. The visitors had little chance in the game after Andres Andrade and Jorge Segura were sent off in the first half. The hosts conceded the deciding goal in the 47th minute, when Edwin Cardona netted a spectacular long-range strike. With the loss, Atlas slipped to 15th place in the league table. The club have produced disastrous form this season, having won just five, drawn one and lost ten league matches this term.

Monterrey took a point from a 2-2 home draw in a league match against Necaxa last weekend. Brian Fernandez netted the opening goal for the visitors after just three minutes but Johan Vasquez and Adam Bareiro put Monterrey ahead before the half-time break. However, the club’s defensive weaknesses let them down again, as they conceded a powerful strike to Daniel Alvarez in the 61st minute. Diego Alonso’s side remain at third place in the league table, eight points behind league leaders Club Leon. The club will be determined to close their campaign with a league win against Atlas to ensure that they qualify as one of the top seeds. Monterrey drew 1-1 at home against Tigres UANL in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final in midweek. Having won 2-1 on aggregate, they have won the competition.

Atlas have lost their past three consecutive league games, conceding eight goals in the process. In contrast, Monterrey have won two and drawn one of their three most recent league contests. Given that recent form, the visitors should have little trouble securing the away win in this league match.

Monterrey have netted the opener in 11 of their 16 matches in the league this term. On the other hand, Atlas have conceded the opening goal in 11 of their 16 league games this season. Given those facts, a Monterrey opener would come as no surprise in this league contest.

Monterrey have won all of their past six meetings in the league and playoffs against Veracruz. The hosts claimed a 3-1 win over Atlas when the teams met in the league in November last year.
