Aston Villa’s Jordan Lyden, Orjan Haskjold Nyland and Tom Carroll are sidelined while James Chester remains doubtful. The team could also be without prolific striker Tammy Abraham, who is still recovering from a shoulder issue.

As for West Bromwich, Gareth Barry and James Morrison are likely to miss out again. Meanwhile, Hal Robson-Kanu is suspended after being sent off on the final day of the regular season.

Aston Villa ended their regular season in terrific form, winning ten, drawing one and losing one of their last 12 league matches to fire themselves into fifth place. Last weekend’s 2-1 home loss to eventual champions Norwich was their first defeat in league action since losing 2-0 to West Bromwich at Villa Park back in mid-February. Overall, the Villans were not an easy nut to crack on their own patch, as the club lost only four of their 23 home league matches this season (11 wins, eight draws).

West Bromwich also ended their regular season with a league loss, falling to a 3-1 defeat to Derby at Pride Park. The Baggies have really struggled away from home of late, losing four, drawing one and winning only one of their last six away league matches. Nevertheless, only Norwich (45), Sheff Utd (40) and Bristol City (38) picked up more away points in the league than Albion’s 37. West Brom finished in fourth, four points ahead of Villa.

West Bromwich picked up four points from their two league meetings with Aston Villa this season, including a 2-0 win at Villa Park in February. As I touched on, though, Albion have been poor on the road in the league of late. This will no doubt be a tight playoff game, but I’m backing the home team to edge it.

Three of Aston Villa’s last four league wins have been by a one-goal margin, with the latest a 1-0 victory. With this tie expected to be a close affair at Villa Park, one goal could be enough to nick it. With that in mind, take a punt on another 1-0 home win.

West Bromwich are unbeaten in their last four league encounters against Aston Villa, winning two and drawing two.
