English Premier League -- Tottenham Hotspur VS Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur: Great purchases ( Recent Form: W L W D D )

Tottenham Hotspur made the Champions League final last season, which was eventually lost against Liverpool, and finished fourth in the Premier League. At the bottom, Mauricio Pochettino was able to look back on a great season with the Spurs, but last season it turned out that Tottenham's selection was not wide enough. As the season progressed, the Spurs increasingly had to deal with injuries and Pochettino did not always have good substitutes behind - for example, Fernando Llorente is not even allowed to tie the shoelaces of Harry Kane. That is why it was expected that the Spurs would use the transfer period to get some new players. That happened. Lucas Moura (January 2018) was the last major purchase of Tottenham Hotspur until the last transfer period. With Tanguy Ndombélé (Olympique Lyon) and Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham), the Spurs have strengthened themselves extremely well. A lot is expected from record purchases, Ndombélé, while Sessegnon is seen as one of the greatest talents in England. In addition, last year's nineteen-year-old super talent was one of the bright spots in degraded Fulham. With Kieran Trippier (Atlético Madrid) a basic player from last season has left Spurs, but The Lilywhites have managed to retain Christian Eriksen. The Danish player may theoretically be able to go to a top club in Spain, Germany or Italy in the coming weeks, but experience has shown that English clubs generally no longer let go of determining players after the English transfer market has closed. Tottenham Hotspur itself would then no longer be able to attract a replacement.

Aston Villa: Take a gamble ( Recent Form: W W W W W )

Last season, Aston Villa unexpectedly promoted to the Premier League. The Villans finished in fifth place in the Championship and therefore picked up a ticket for the play-offs. In those playoffs, Aston Villa was first too strong for West Bromwich Albion (2-2 over two games, win after penalties) and in the final at Wembley, Derby County was beaten 2-1. As a result, the promotion for Aston Villa came quite unexpectedly and the question is whether The Villans are ready for the Premier League. In any case, the club from Birmingham had many rental players under contract last season and they have largely left. Tammy Abraham in particular will be missed, as the attacker who returned to Chelsea scored 26 times in forty matches. At Aston Villa, they are determined not to return to the Championship after just one season, as The Villans spent this transfer summer around 150 million euros. For that money, Wesley Moraes (Club Brugge), Tyrone Mings (definitively taken over from AFC Bournemouth), Douglas Luiz (Manchester City) and Anwar El Ghazi (definitively transferred from Lille) were brought to Villa Park. The Villans bought more than a complete team and the question is whether it will work with Aston Villa. As a PhD candidate, Fulham did exactly the same last season and The Cottagers immediately relegated to the Championship, with the result that players are now pressing the salary line. At Aston Villa, they mainly hope that a number of players are direct hits and if, for example, an El Ghazi or a Marvelous Nakamba (ex-Vitesse and Club Brugge) fails, they take that for granted.

After all, Aston Villa closed the preparation with a nice 1-3 win over RB Leizpig, but in the previous duels, Villa played against smaller clubs from England and the American Minnesota United. So apart from RB Leipig, The Villans have not yet played against strong clubs and that is Tottenham Hotspur, of course. But at the Spurs they have to miss two important vanguard players with Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli. Last season it often appeared that Tottenham had a hard time when one or more of the Big Four (Kane, Son, Eriksen and Alli) was absent and against Aston Villa two of those four are missing. So I do not expect the Spurs to beat Aston Villa for a while and that is why I go for the Aston Villa +1.5.
