Toluca lost their third league match of the Clausura season last weekend as they were beaten 2-0 away against Tijuana. The visitors conceded the opening goal to Miller Bolanos after 14 minutes and failed to produce a single shot on target for the remainder of the league match. Antonio Rios missed a penalty for Toluca in the 63rd minute and the hosts netted a second goal thanks to Fabian Castillo’s right-foot strike five minutes later. Fernando Tobio was sent off for Toluca in the 94th minute and will now miss their next league fixture. With the loss, the club slipped to 12th place in the table. The team currently have a disappointing haul of six points, having won two and lost three. A home win against Cruz Azul in their upcoming league match will prove essential if they are to reverse their fortunes.

Cruz Azul lost their second league match of the season as they were beaten 2-0 away against Club Leon last weekend. The visitors were severely hindered from the 18th minute as Yoshimar Yotun was given a straight red card for bringing Fernando Navarro Moran down in the area. Angel Mena netted the penalty that put Club Leon ahead. The hosts went on to dominate the run of play, doubling their lead with a volley from Jean Meneses in the 46th minute. With the loss, Cruz Azul slipped to tenth place in the league. The club have collected a meagre haul of seven points this term, having recorded two wins, a draw and two losses. Pedro Caixinha’s side will have to particularly improve their offensive play this term, as they have only scored three times in their opening five league games. Cruz Azul drew 1-1 away against Club Leon in the Mexican cup in midweek.

Toluca have now recorded three consecutive league losses, whereas Cruz Azul have only lost one of their past three league games, winning the other two. Given that form, I am picking Caixinha’s side to secure the away win in this league encounter.

Cruz Azul have scored the opener in three of their five league matches this term, whereas Toluca have conceded first in all but one of their five league contests. Given those facts, I expect Cruz Azul to score the opening goal here.

Cruz Azul have won two and drawn two of their past four league encounters against Toluca. The hosts claimed a 1-0 win when the teams last played in the league in August.
