Necaxa made a major statement last weekend as they claimed an emphatic 4-1 away win against Puebla. The hosts opened the scoring with a left-foot shot from Vladimir Lorona in the eighth minute but Necaxa replied with a header from Angel Sepulveda five minutes later. Guillermo Vazquez’s side extended their lead with a double from Brian Fernandez and an injury-time strike from Facundo Castro. Necaxa will be very happy with their current run of form in the league, having taken ten points from their opening four league games. After a terrible run in the Apertura stage, the team look well-drilled and ready to push for a playoff spot this tournament. Necaxa lost 3-1 away against CF America in the Mexican cup in midweek.

Guadalajara drew 0-0 at home against Veracruz in the league last week. The team will be happy with their run of form so far this season, especially with their opening wins against Tijuana, Cruz Azul and Toluca, although they have also lost once. Moving forward, Jose Cardozo’s side will have to maintain their compact, counter-attacking style. After finishing their Apertura campaign in a disappointing 11th place, trailing the top eight by six points, Guadalajara have looked like potential title contenders this season. Even without the home advantage, Guadalajara will enter the upcoming league contest against Necaxa with the confidence and momentum on their side.

Despite Necaxa’s positive start to the season, I am picking Guadalajara to secure the win in this league contest. Cardozo has a greater depth of talent in his squad and his team will enter this league match looking to take all three points.

Guadalajara have scored four goals in their five league games so far. On the other hand, Necaxa have conceded an average of one goal in their four league fixtures. Gualajara won their last league meeting against Necaxa 1-0 back in August and I think another victory by the same scoreline would come as no surprise.

Guadalajara have won four and drawn five of their nine most recent league encounters against Necaxa.
